North Carolina Rural Telehealth Initiative logo

The North Carolina Rural Telehealth Initiative (NCRTI) is an effort to leverage the use of visual communications to provide rural healthcare preventive services, specialist care, rehabilitation and stroke treatment for rural and/or economically depressed areas.

The original focus of the program was to provide stroke response through the administration of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) to stroke patients in rural areas, minimizing the damage caused by a stroke and maximizing the survivability of the patient when administered within three hours of the on-set of symptoms.

A large part of the program involves finding grant opportunities suited to each locations needs and eligibilities. The Little Guy, LLC has partnered with LifeSize Grant Assistance Program and with Cisco Grant Services in providing grant assistance services in which end-users are provided varying levels of services at no cost to them ranging from finding the grants, to writing the technical portion of the grant all the way up to and including providing a grant writer to handle the project in some cases (dictated by the total scope of the project).

While the development of the acute care portion for stroke response is still under development in this area, several other services are already in existence. Work continues in collaborations with University of North Carolina School of Medicine and Wake Forest University School of Medicine to identify available services and identify additonal needs in the communities.

The Vision Quest Project

is a program designed to use visual communications to provide access to quality education, vocational assistance and health services and quality of life to children and adults in Indian Country.

The program utilizes video conferencing and tele- presence technology to bring subject matter experts, teachers, staff development consultants, medical specialists, vocational trainers, councilors and much more, where they are needed the most.

Additionally, the program focuses on projects that can be done using available grant funding and provides assistance with finding the right grant or funding source for the project, and the technical expertise to write competitive grants.

Imagine the ability to bring in resources to the most rural or isolated of areas from anywhere in the world. The possibilities are endless. Conduct a virtual field trip in live-time with a diver on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, take a cultural exchange trip to people living across the country or through the United Nations to a group of student from across the Atlantic, bring medical specialists from major U.S. facilities or from across the world to your tribal clinic, provide job seekers with training from vocational programs in other states, add mental health counseling to your list of medical services from counselors from around the country. What can be imagined can likely be achieved.
